Foundation Conservatory Garden greenhouse foundation

A right foundation forms the basis for years of (growth) pleasure. The right foundation can be chosen based on the model, local conditions and your personal wishes. Below you will find more information and options.

Frequently asked questions and answers about your foundation

A foundation is a raised edge with a height of 10-12 cm. First the foundation is placed, then the frame is mounted perpendicularly on top.

What is meant by a foundation?
A foundation is a raised edge with a height of 10-12 cm. First the foundation is laid, then the frame is placed perpendicular to it.

Is a foundation necessary?
Yes, a foundation is actually necessary for every conservatory. The aluminum frame of the conservatory is not only placed perpendicular to the foundation, but it also 'falls' around the foundation on both sides. So there is an aluminum profile edge over the foundation.

What are the advantages of a foundation?
A foundation provides a strong and stable base for the conservatory. If the foundation is supported by tiles and/or concrete posts, it will not sink. This prevents possible glass damage due to subsidence. In addition, a foundation ensures a higher gutter and ridge height of the conservatory, so that you experience more space in the conservatory. In the Classic models, the steel foundation edge ensures that the wooden frame is not in direct contact with the ground. This promotes the durability of the frame and is certainly recommended if the conservatory is placed on an unpaved area.

Is a concrete edge under the foundation necessary?
Doika advises emphatically the use of a concrete edge under the foundation. You can easily place the foundation of the greenhouse on this. You can attach the greenhouse foundation to the concrete edge with concrete plugs. The concrete edge can easily be made 100% level. For more information and photos, see the next page: leveling the concrete edge

Is my terrace a suitable foundation?
No. If the terrace serves as a foundation, a foundation edge must be provided. The conservatory will ultimately be placed on this foundation.

Is there a foundation available for every conservatory?
Yes, a foundation is available for every conservatory. This is often optional, but the New Classic, Birdlip, Burford, Blockley and Bourton models are supplied with a foundation. This is clearly stated and you will not find the foundation as an option in the price list.

How do I attach a foundation to the subsurface?
Depending on the subsurface and the foundation, there are various options. Roughly speaking, we can say that a foundation is screwed to the same surface on a paved surface. When installed in open ground, the supplied pipes offer the option of anchoring the foundation in concrete at the corners. This is not absolutely necessary, but is recommended.

Manufacturers increasingly recommend pouring the foundation in concrete. You can use the (corner) frames that are supplied with each foundation for this. A depth of 80 cm is required for frost-free processing of a concrete foundation. This requires extended drain pipes, which are not supplied with the foundation. From an insurance point of view, it is advisable to cover the greenhouse foundation with concrete. It may be a condition for the insurer to pay out in the event of damage to the conservatory and foundation.

How does a foundation work?
It is crucial that a foundation is properly has been placed. A foundation is level, the corners are right-angled and both diagonals are equidistant from each other. When laying the foundation in the ground, it works well to place it on foundation stones near the corners. Place the foundation stones below ground level, so that you do not notice them later.

Does a foundation have to be 100% level?
No, you can place a foundation with a slope of 1 % about the direction of the gutter / ridge. This is often also the slope percentage that you use for your paving. With a slope of 1 cm per 100 cm you ensure that the water entering the gutter runs in one direction. The foundation must be completely flat. If your conservatory has doors without thresholds, the front and rear facades must be level.

Is a foundation always supplied separately?
No, if the foundation is made of aluminium, it is these are often supplied integrated with the frame. This ensures an optimal connection between frame and foundation. Steel foundations are usually supplied loose and are attached to the conservatory frame with clips, bolts and nuts/screws.

Can I also make a foundation myself?
Yes, that is possible Certainly. Please note that the specified sizes are rough sizes. For exact foundation dimensions, please refer to the manual of the relevant conservatory. This contains the foundation dimensions in mm. These are often the outside dimensions of the foundation. (Hard) wooden beams are suitable for this, but a cast concrete edge or masonry foundation is also possible.

I live on soft (peat) soil, is this a problem?
If the foundation is placed on a surface that can subside over time, it is advisable to replace the foundation / to place a self-build foundation on piles. Depending on the surface, posts of a certain length can be used. It is important to know the exact foundation dimensions, which are stated in the conservatory manual.
