A beautiful planter can quickly brighten up your terrace or balcony. Especially if you add different flowers or plants every season so that you can enjoy every season.
A flower box or planter can give your patio or balcony a completely different look. It is then a good idea to choose a planter that fits well with the balcony or terrace in terms of size. A very large planter on a small balcony often fills up quickly. It is better to opt for a smaller planter, but not too small that it does not stand out
If you want to attach a flower box to the outside of a balcony of an apartment complex, it is important to ask a structural engineer what is possible. This is due to safety. If an accident happens, you are liable for it. Something that can and should be prevented. Therefore, also check carefully whether the flower box is properly secured.
When you choose a planter and plants, it is important that the plants have enough space for the roots. On the surface you use potsherds, hydro granules or gravel. You need sufficient potting soil to fill the planter.
It is better to change the potting soil after a few months and rearrange the plants to prevent acidification of the soil. It is also possible to choose nutritional pellets or nutritional preparation. Before you plant the plants, it is good to check the plants first. The placement and amount of water is very important to know.
If you don't feel like fishing weeds out of the planters, you can place an anti-root cloth on them and finish with gravel, for example. With an anti-root cloth you can control weeds and they have no chance to grow in your planter.
Not only are there many different planters, the hooks on which you can hang it can also differ. You already have chrome, stainless steel, plastic-coated and metal hooks.
Attach the planter hooks securely to the planter with screws. The handy thing about hooks is that you can simply hang the wooden planter on the balcony railing. So you don't have to make screw holes in your facade. This is a big advantage if you have a rental property. The holes have to be filled again when you move.
If you decide to hang your wooden planter on the wall of the shed, it is best if it is in both a horizontal and vertical line. This gives a calm look and you can enjoy your wooden planter for a long time.
First mark one hole and the next hole, making sure this is done level. For a stone wall, a 6 millimeter masonry drill and the same size plugs. You can then secure the brackets with a screw and place the planter in them. It is best to use wedge bolts for heavy planters. This ensures that it is firmly secured.
Are you super handy and creative? Perhaps you would like to make a wooden planter yourself. These are the tools you need:
Wood drill
Screwdriver/drill
Saw
Sander/sandpaper
Pencil
Tape measure
Nails or a stapler for the anti-root cloth
Once you have found all the tools together, you can start collecting wood and other materials for the planter. If you want to make a planter of 60 x 60 x 60 cm you will need the following:
4 square posts with a height of 60 centimeters
1 square post with a height of 20 centimeters or 4 other legs for under the planter
A waterproof base plate measuring 60 by 60 centimeters
24 planks of wood measuring 60x10 centimeters for the sides
76 screws to attach the planks to the posts and the base plate
4 square posts with a height of 60 centimeters
Now that we have everything in place, we will start making a construction drawing. Make a simple design for yourself and clearly write down the measurements so that it is easier for yourself. This saves a lot of irritation and allows you to get the job done easily.
Have you found a type of wood that is still untreated (scaffolding wood)? First sand the wood very well. You can do this by hand with sandpaper, but to make it easier you can also do this with a sander.
After sanding, dust the plank slightly and treat the wood. You can do this with stain or lacquer. You can also do this job when the planter is ready, but also when you have just finished sanding. After all, now you can easily access everything!
Now that the wood has been sanded and possibly stained/varnished, we can start building the planter. Place the base plate on a table or on the floor and place 4 planks of 60 x 10 cm around it. As a base plate it is best to use a plate that is waterproof and can support the weight of the ground.
Now drill a hole in the planks measuring 60 x 10 cm and screw them into the base plate. Approximately 5 screws are used per plank to ensure that the wooden planks are properly attached to the bottom.
Are all planks properly secured? Then you now have a base plate with shelves on the bottom row. Then place a square post in each corner on the inside of the flower box. Screw the planks to the post so that it is also firmly fixed. Use 2 screws per post.
Now turn the planter upside down and screw the bottom plate firmly to the posts with 2 screws per post. Turn the planter back again.
Now you can assemble the remaining planks. Place the planks one above the other and securely tighten with a screwdriver/drill. Each plank is attached to the wooden posts with a total of 4 bolts.
It is of course not the intention that the bottom of the planters rot. That is why it is very important to place feet under the planters. The 20cm pole is used for this. Saw this post into 4 pieces and make sure that each is 5cm high. You place this under the planter by screwing them in place. You can also use other legs for this.
Did you go big and make a large planter? It might be a good idea to add extra reinforcement here. Choose posts that are slightly shorter than the posts in the corners of the planter. These posts are no longer visible once you have filled the planter with soil and flowers.
Make sure that your plants drown in your self-made planter. You can prevent this by drilling holes in your planter. The quantity depends on the size. We provide the planter of 60 x 60 x 60cm with 5 drill holes of approximately 1cm in size. Drill a hole in each corner and a hole in the center. The water will drain from the hole, but also between the planks.
You can line the inside of the planter with an anti-root cloth. This prevents roots from growing between the planks. A cloth allows a lot of water to pass through, is durable and also ensures that you can enjoy your wooden planter for a long time. This is easy to secure with nails or staples.
You're almost done. It is now time to finish the planter. Fill the screw holes with malleable wood. If you have not yet treated the planks, you can now lightly sand the wooden planter and varnish or apply a layer of stain. If you choose stain, it is a good idea to sand the planks slightly by hand between staining.
