A terrace heater is a good solution if you would like to sit outside, but it is too cold. It provides warmth and light to the outside air, so you can still enjoy a pleasant temperature outside.

The patio heaters are usually gas powered and can heat the environment to a temperature of 20 degrees. They are also virtually silent, so you won't be bothered by any disturbing noise.

There are also different types of patio heaters that work on electricity. It is therefore important to make a good consideration between the types.

It is therefore very logical that you ask yourself which patio heater is suitable for you! We are happy to help you find the right heater for you! Everything is explained step by step below.

What does the surface to be heated look like?

When choosing a patio heater, it is important to look at the space you want to heat. Because is this a sheltered place or an open space? This affects the operation of the patio heater.

The type of patio you want to heat is important to consider when choosing a patio heater. Because a different type of patio heater is recommended for a windy patio compared to an enclosed space.

A patio heater for an open space

By an open space we mean when one or more sides of the terrace are open. There is wind or draft on these types of terraces. This therefore requires the installation of a patio heater built for this purpose.

For an open terrace it is recommended to choose a patio heater with a short wave. Short wave patio heaters mean that they have radiant heat, this radiation and heat is comparable to the heat of the sun. This heat will not dissipate. These patio heaters heat the entire surface that falls within the range of radiation.

In an open space you can use a gas heater or an electric heater.

Heating a closed terrace

When all walls of a canopy are closed, or can be closed, we speak of closed spaces. In a closed space there is little/no influence from outside. This is a place where there is no wind and drafts have no influence. This is a situation where a long wave patio heater provides pleasant warmth.

Long wave heaters heat the air and do not radiate direct heat, this is also called convection heat. You can then compare these patio heaters with central heating. The additional advantage of this patio heater is that it emits little to no light.

It is very important to know that if the surface to be heated is closed, you cannot use a gas patio heater.

The size of a terrace and the choice of heaters

Not only what type of space is important when choosing, the size of the terrace must also be taken into account. It of course depends on whether you want to heat the entire terrace, or whether you choose to heat only the seating area with a patio heater. This determines how much power is needed for heating.

If you choose short wave patio heaters:

  • 1400 Watt heats approximately a surface of 2.5 by 2.5.

  • 2000 Watt heats approximately a surface of 3 by 3.

  • 2500 Watt heats approximately a surface of 3.5 by 3.5

If you choose a long wave patio heater:

  • 250 watts per m2 are suitable for an enclosed space.

  • Is 500 watts suitable per m2 in a sheltered spot.

  • The ideal hanging height is 2.50m

The heat range of gas heaters depends on the gas heater, this is often included in the description.

An electric heater or a gas patio heater?

You also have the choice of an electric heater or one of the gas patio heaters. Both gas and electric patio heaters can be used in open spaces. But when looking for the best patio heater for an enclosed space, it must automatically be an electric patio heater. This is because when heated by a gas heater, oxygen combustion takes place, which is dangerous in a closed space.

With a gas patio heater, you also have to take the gas bottle into account. You need this when heating a surface. These gas bottles provide stability, warmth and safety. When the patio heater is off, you can connect the gas bottle to the gas bottle using a flexible gas hose. Make sure it is properly secured and connect the other side to the patio heater. Always ensure that gas bottles are placed on a stable surface.

With electric patio heaters, no gas bottle is required, but you must always ensure that the electric patio heater is connected to a power point via a cord. Without power, the electric patio heaters will not work.

Assembling the heaters

With an electric patio heater you have several options for installing it. You can also mount it on the wall or ceiling of the veranda, provided there is a power connection here. There are various electric heaters available that you can operate with a remote control. This of course provides even more convenience!

The gas heater has fewer installation options than the electric patio heaters. The gas heater must always be on a stable surface. The advantage of this heater is that you can easily move it. This is because no cable is needed for power, unlike electric heaters.

Choose the best patio heater for you!

What's the best terrace heaters depending on your preferences and the type of terrace you have wants to heat. So you should consider whether you are looking for a heater for a windy terrace or for an enclosed space. Based on this you can already choose one of the electric heaters or the gas heaters.
