outdoor planters

Plants in your garden, around the house or on the balcony make the environment a bit more colorful. Plants can also provide a soothing feeling. If you also combine the winter-hardy plants with a beautiful planter, you complete it!

If you enjoy gardening in the summer, you also want your garden to look good in the winter! No dead flowers, but beautiful green plants in pots. Logically! For this reason, it is smart to choose perennials that are winter hardy and also evergreen. We have listed a number of them for you!

Types of hardy plants in pots

If you choose a beautiful plant in a pot, you also want it to be able to withstand the weather conditions. It is therefore important to choose a plant that is winter hardy and will also grow well in a pot.

Not all plants like cold temperatures. A busy lily, for example, likes to be indoors in colder temperatures, while a lavender can withstand low temperatures well. It is important to make a good choice for flowers and plants in pots in winter.

Perennials range from conifers, shrubs, sheep grass to lesser-known species such as the snow aster or the Erica Carnea.

The Erica Carnea

The Erica Carnea is better known as the winter heath. This is a plant that does very well in the colder months. The plant not only remains green, but also blooms beautifully with pink/red flowers. This plant likes to be in full sun, and you must water this plant well.

With winter heath, you must take into account that you will have to prune it back after the winter. This is important because otherwise bare branches will remain on the winter heather, meaning it will no longer bloom the following winter.

The Gaultheria Procumbens

The mountain tea, or Gaultheria Procumbens, is one of the winter-hardy plants and very decorative. In June and August it blooms inconspicuously, then this plant produces bright red berries that are often used for beautiful Christmas arrangements. In autumn this plant has a beautiful purple-red color.

For the location of these plants, it is important to choose a spot in partial shade, in moist soil.

Do you want to make delicious tea? This is also possible with the Gaultheria Procumbens!

The Stipa Tenuissima

Field grass, the Stipa Tenuissima is an ornamental grass that can withstand heat well, but is also resistant to low temperatures. It is advisable to water these plants occasionally. A place in the sun is certainly desirable! The fine structure of this plant makes it appear to wave in the wind.

You can prune the spent flowers in the spring so that they can bloom beautifully again.

The Dianthus Kahori

If you are looking for winter-hardy plants for pots, you can choose the Dianthus Kahori. You can place this perennial plant on a terrace or balcony in full sun but also in the shade. Even at temperatures below -15, this plant remains beautiful!

This plant cannot withstand wet feet, so do not water this plant too much.

How should you place perennials in a planter or pot?

If you have purchased new perennials, you will of course want to pot them as soon as possible in planters. If you are going to do this, it is important that you carry out the repotting correctly.

It is important that you first check whether there are any holes at the bottom of the pot. This is important so that excess water can drain from the planter. If this hole is not present at the bottom of the planter, it is important that you drill it yourself. The number of holes you make depends on the size of the planter, often 4 drainage holes at the bottom are sufficient.

To ensure that the water can actually drain from the planter, you must ensure that it does not become clogged with potting soil. Therefore, make sure you cover the drainage holes with a layer of gauze.

If the root ball of perennials is very dry, it is important to first immerse it in water. You can then fill the planter with 1/3 of hydro granules and fill the rest with potting soil. You must then press this base well.

You can then add an extra layer of hydro granules, this ensures that the potting soil dries out less quickly. The potting soil often contains nutrition for the perennials for 2 months, after which make sure you add extra nutrition.

What is the best way to care for perennials in pots?

Spring is the best time to plant perennials in pots and containers. Make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom and fresh potting soil! Also remember to water the plants regularly.

Of course, all perennials also have different care requirements. Some plants need a lot of water, while other plants in pots need less water. There are also perennials that grow best in the sun, while most perennials prefer to be in partial shade. It is important for good care to choose the right location.

A plant often feels more at home in the open ground than in a planter, which is why you should give the plants and flowers in pots some extra love! Consider extra food or a nice spot out of the wind.

Choosing the right planters for perennials

With small pots, the plants can dry out more quickly because there is too little nutrition available. If you choose larger flower boxes, care is also easier!

You can of course choose many different planters for the above plants. Do you choose a square container, a round flower box or would you prefer one of the rectangular flower pots? It depends on your own wishes which flower boxes suit your balcony, garden or terrace!

You can of course take the color of the perennial plant and the flower box into account. It is nice to plant a striking plant in a black plastic planter. With terracotta pots or a Corten steel flower box, it is nice to choose a perennial plant with beautiful green leaves. This contrast creates a pleasant atmosphere.

You can purchase a flower box in different sizes, all kinds of shapes, but also made of different materials! You should also take into account whether the planter can also be placed outside. Think of products made of polyester, corten steel, wood, plastic or aluminum.

Buy your hardy plants for pots

There are different types of plants that can withstand lower temperatures, sometimes it is necessary to give them extra protection. For example, you can insulate the plant better by placing a jute bag around the pot.

If you choose the right plants in a pot, you can leave them outside all year round! Do you already see it in your mind? Then quickly order beautiful planters from Doika!
