What requirements must your parcel letterbox meet and what does Dutch and Belgian legislation say

The location of your parcel letterbox

The most important requirement is that your (parcel) mailbox is as close as possible to the public road. If your parcel is in the mailbox in or at your home, the distance that the postal deliverer must travel from the public road to your mailbox may not exceed 10 meters. If the front part of the path to your home runs over a piece of municipal land, this is also included. The postal worker is also not allowed to go up and down stairs that are higher than 2.5 meters - calculated from the road surface.

The height of your parcel letterbox

Because most parcel letterboxes from Doika can be placed either free-standing (possibly with a tripod or letterbox pole) or wall-mounted, you can easily determine the height yourself, so that you and the mail and parcel deliverer can easily reach the opening. The insertion opening should be neither too high nor too low. The guideline for this is a height of 110 cm from the place where the postman is standing, which is ideal. If the opening is lower than 60 cm and higher than 180 cm, the location of your (parcel) letterbox does not meet the requirements. Parcel letterboxes come in all shapes and sizes. The size of the insertion opening

(Parcel) mailboxes must meet the following criteria: The insertion opening must be horizontal and at least 26.5 cm long and 3.2 cm high. With the large insertion openings of our parcel letterboxes you more than meet this requirement. The letterbox flap of the Topbox-XL also meets these requirements for postal delivery.

The size of the storage space

The letterbox should not fill up too quickly. Therefore, the space behind the insertion opening must be at least 15 cm deep, 27 cm wide and 38 cm high. All compartments of the parcel letterboxes amply comply with these guidelines.

House number

The house number must be affixed to or near the parcel letterbox. In groups of letterboxes, for example in apartment buildings or on recreational areas, the numbering must correspond as much as possible to the numbering method used in the building or on the recreation area. Belgian legislation

Different guidelines apply to Belgian legislation. What requirements must a letterbox – and therefore also a parcel letterbox – meet to be recognized by the Belgian government? Look here  for the BIPT guidelines.

1. The parcel mailboxes must be large enough to accommodate large envelopes (size C4). A C4 envelope is 22.9 cm wide and 32.4 cm high. An A4 size should fit without folding
2. The letterbox must have an opening (slot) of at least 23 cm wide and 3 cm high. This insertion opening may be either vertical or horizontal.
3. The opening of the parcel letterbox is at least 70 cm and maximum 170 cm from the ground. This way, the parcel deliverer can always easily reach the parcel letterbox. No guidelines are provided for the parcel section of the parcel letterbox.

The location of your parcel letterbox

You must place the parcel letterbox 'at the edge of the public road'. This boundary refers to the property boundary. Furthermore, access to the parcel mailbox must always be free and without danger. If there are any contradictions in practice, please ask your municipality for advice. In apartments, the (parcel) mailboxes may be placed at the front door or on the ground floor in an easily accessible and well-lit location.
