How do you keep your chickens healthy in winter?
The winter months bring unique challenges for chicken keepers. Chickens are naturally resistant to cold, but need extra care to stay healthy. From a draught-free chicken coop to nutritious meals – in this article we discuss everything you need to know to keep your chickens safe and help you through the cold months comfortably.
Why is good winter care important?
Although chickens can withstand the cold, they are susceptible to problems such as freeze damage, reduced resistance and stress from cold. A well-prepared coop, appropriate nutrition and hygiene are essential to prevent your chickens from becoming ill.
Prevent freezing of combs and wattles.
Keep the airways healthy with adequate ventilation.
Adjust diet to support their energy needs.
1. A warm, draught-free and well-insulated cage
The chicken coop is the first line of defense against the cold. Make sure the hutch is draft-free, well insulated and comfortable.
Draft-free but ventilated
Check for holes and close them with rubber strips or sealant.
Ventilation prevents moisture accumulation and mold formation, so install ventilation grilles high in the loft.
Insulation
Use foam boards or foil to insulate walls and roof.
A thick layer of straw or wood shavings on the bottom provides extra warmth and comfort.
Frost-free water
Use a heated drinking bowl to prevent freezing.
Replace water several times a day if it does freeze.
2. Nutrition: more calories and protein
In winter, chickens use more energy to keep themselves warm. A good diet is crucial.
Energy-rich food
Add corn or grains to their food. These are digested slowly, which provides extra warmth.
Give a warm treat such as cooked oatmeal every now and then.
Vitamins and minerals
Use a supplement in their drinking water to make up for deficiencies.
Feed green food such as cabbage leaves regularly for extra vitamins.
