How to fill the planter? 

Did you just find a new planter? But do you have no idea how best to fill a large flower box? It is of course important that you do this correctly if you want to enjoy your new plants for as long as possible!

Do you want to fill a large flower box so that your garden gets more color? Would you like to provide your Corten steel planters with green perennials so that your garden also has something green in winter? Then it is important that you fill the large planter correctly!

Ensure good drainage in the (polyester) planters

It is important for the planter that you provide drainage holes. Most plants don't like wet feet! If it has rained heavily, it is important that the water can drain away easily. Don't you have drainage holes in the planter?

Then you can consider, for example, placing hydro granules or tuff in the planter. If you choose tuff, it is wise to replace the tuff approximately every four weeks, so that no calcium remains in the water. This is not good for plants.

If you have purchased a planter that does not have drainage holes, make sure that you make (drill) a number of small holes in the flower box yourself, with approximately a diameter of 20 mm. This ensures that the water can drain away easily. Make these holes in the bottom of the plant pot, so that the water does not come into direct contact with the plant.

Hydro granules for a water balance

It is important that you provide the planters with hydro granules. These are small balls of clay, which ensure that moisture is retained during drought. When these small balls are saturated, they let the water go towards the flower box. This way the plants stay beautiful and green for longer, because they do not dry out. Hydro granules are therefore ideal to use in your planter!

This water then flows back into the garden via the aforementioned drainage holes. With flower boxes made of Corten steel it is better not to use hydro granules.

Provide good potting soil so that the plant is sturdy

To ensure that the flowering plants bloom and the plants grow, it is important that you use the right potting soil. Potting soil contains nutrients that plants need to grow. It is important that potting soil is added lightly to the (high) pots.

How much potting soil is used also depends on the flower pot. This must be placed on top of the hydro granules, and then up to approximately 3 centimeters below the edge of the container. If you use more potting soil here, it will become too heavy and a crack can easily appear in the planter when you fill the flower box with water.

The reason why you should not fill the fresh potting soil to the top of the planters is that otherwise the water you give the plants will run over the edge of the planters. It is important that you also press the right potting soil a little.

Plant your plants in the Corten steel planters

It is now important that you place the plants, plastic pot and all, in a bucket of water. Then you can remove the plant from the plastic growing pot. The planter is of course already ready, now you can put the plant in it. You can fill the planter with potting soil to ensure that the plant is sturdy.

It is important that the root ball of the plant is at the same height as the potting soil. This prevents the root ball and roots from drying out. The plants in the Corten steel flower box must be thoroughly wet, so that the roots can immediately become established.

Choose the right plants for your large planter

Which plants you want to place in the large planters naturally depends entirely on your own taste. You can choose different colorful flowers, or green plants in the large planter.

To create a beautiful whole, it is best to first choose a color tone, so that you do not end up with a large planter that is too busy. You can also fill the planter with one leafy plant and surround it with flowering plants. It just depends on what you like!

If you choose a large corten steel planter, please keep in mind that it can become quite heavy. So make sure you place it on a sturdy surface.

You must take into account the fact that the plants are still growing in the large planter. Especially if you have ensured good drainage, granules and nutritious soil. For this reason, it is important that you do not put too many plants in one pot. You can place hydro granules around the plant to decorate the planter.
