How do you clean garden furniture?

Maintaining garden furniture is an important job if you want to enjoy your furniture for a long time. However, there are so many different types of materials. What is the easiest way to approach this? We have listed a number of tips here.

There are different types and sizes of garden furniture. You have plastic garden furniture, wooden garden furniture, but also wicker or textilene. It can therefore be difficult to find the right way to clean if you do not have wooden furniture.

Making soap

It is best to use green soap when cleaning your garden furniture. You make a solution of lukewarm water and green soap. Green soap is not harmful to garden furniture and cleans well.

However, if you suffer from stubborn green deposits, there are many cleaning products you can try with. You can then use old-fashioned green soap for regular maintenance.

Garden furniture often remains in the garden or balcony all year round, regardless of the weather. So they have to endure quite a bit! If you store them indoors, make sure you clean the garden furniture and dry it thoroughly.

Maintenance for wooden garden furniture

If you have wooden garden furniture, it is wise to have it serviced annually. Wood that has no oil becomes a matte gray color. There are several products for sale to degrease garden furniture.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of wood is also best done with green soap and a soft brush.

Do you suffer from persistent pollution such as green deposits? Then you also have cleaning products for this, but adding a few tablespoons of crystal soda to your green soap solution works wonders.

After cleaning, it is wise to oil the garden furniture with a clean cloth. It's a bit of a job, but it's worth it.

Maintenance for plastic garden furniture

Maintaining plastic garden furniture is also very important. Plastic is very sensitive to contamination on smooth surfaces. Dirt will adhere to the top layer of the furniture.

Regular cleaning with soapy water, a clean cloth and a small cap of all-purpose cleaner is often sufficient. A bowl of water with baking soda and natural vinegar is also an option.

Baking soda is milder than regular soda and is therefore better for the plastic. It is recommended to use a soft brush or soft sponge.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or a scouring pad. This can damage the furniture and cannot be repaired. That would be a shame!

Maintenance for wicker and textilene

The use of a hard brush is also not recommended for furniture made of wicker and textilene. A sponge or soft brush should be sufficient. Both materials are synthetic fibers, so you don't want to use aggressive cleaning agents or abrasives. The material is not cheap and abrasives can cause scratches. Scratches cannot be repaired.

Clean regularly

Don't give dirt a chance and clean your plastic garden furniture regularly. This prevents dirt from adhering to the furniture. If you regularly make time to clean your garden furniture, you will notice that this is good for the lifespan and that you can enjoy your garden chairs or lounge sets for longer.

It is of course a shame and unnecessary if you have to buy a new garden set every time. So it also makes a difference in your wallet!

Benefits of wooden garden furniture

Wooden garden furniture fits perfectly in any garden and has a beautiful natural appearance. Each piece of garden furniture can be made yourself, but can of course also be purchased in various stores.

Wood is a versatile material and you can make literally anything with it. From cupboards to chairs, from coat racks to tables, it is all possible.

Perfect type of wood for garden furniture

Each type of wood has its own properties and appearance, but which wood is best for wooden garden furniture? This is difficult to determine, because it also has to do with taste. However, there are two tips that you can take into account:

  • It is important to choose wood that has an FSC quality mark. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. FSC wood is produced according to strict rules regarding legal logging, protection of nature and the rights and well-being of the local population. This is important for the future of nature.

  • Choose hardwood (teak) or impregnated wood. This is certainly important for garden furniture that is outside. Moisture and wood do not mix well and the wood can rot. This is an important point to take into account.

Cleaning wooden garden furniture

As stated earlier, it is important to properly maintain the wooden garden furniture. This means cleaning and treating it with, for example, oil to protect the garden furniture. This way you keep your furniture in good condition and you can enjoy it for a long time.

What to use when cleaning:

  • Clean water

  • Clean cloth

  • Cleaning vinegar

  • Green soap

  • Lukewarm water/warm water

  • Mild cleaning agents

What not to use:

  • Scouring sponge

  • Abrasive cleaner

  • Aggressive cleaning agents

  • Bleaching cleaning agent

  • High pressure cleaner

Why not use a high-pressure cleaner?

People are creatures of convenience. Working with a high-pressure cleaner is quick and the job is done quickly. However, the jet of the high-pressure cleaner is so strong that it will only destroy your garden furniture.

If your garden furniture has a protective layer such as stain or oil, spray it all off with a high-pressure cleaner.

This is of course a waste of the beautiful furniture and unnecessary. If you have a garden set with wickerwork, this will not be beneficial either. It is better to leave the high-pressure cleaner and grab the garden hose and carefully rinse the garden set with warm water.

Baitwork

You can also easily rinse wickerwork clean and the tiles in the garden are also a bonus. Dry the garden set thoroughly afterwards and don't forget the aluminum frame that is often included. It is often made of stainless steel, but it remains more beautiful if it is thoroughly dry.
